Earning the First Win

At the start of the game, the Motor City Offense came out ready to play, as they drove the ball down to the Canton eight yard line. However the Classics’ Defense was able to remain stout and hold the V8’s to only a field goal. On Canton’s first offensive series, QB Cameron Curtis and his receiving corps opened the game through the air, completing consecutive passing plays to WR Kendra Wells as she capped off the drive with a touchdown.

As the second quarter started, Motor City attempted to move the ball through the air and test the Canton Secondary, but LB Gary Clem was not having it, as he picked off the ball at the Motor City 30 yard line making his first interception of the season. After receiving the ball, QB Cameron Curtis continued his  aerial onslaught by once again hitting WR Kendra Wells (13 rec., 142 yards, 1 td), WR Mike Twinscrew (2 rec., 18 yards) and RB Robert “RoJo” Johnson, with Johnson catching a short screen for Canton’s second touchdown. Despite the lack of success, Motor City stuck to their game plan, and attempted another deep throw, which resulted in another interception– this time by CB Conner Darian (3 tckls., 1 int.) marking his second of the young season. As the second quarter came to a close, the V8 Defense stepped up to thwart a Classics scoring drive by sacking QB Curtis and then coming up with their first interception of the game. Although Motor City tried to close out the second quarter by putting points on the board, they were held to a long field goal attempt which fell just outside of the goal posts.

To start the second half, the Classics’ Offense drove the ball down within scoring range but the drive ended with an interception of a pass attempt from QB Curtis to WR Twinscrew. After forcing a turnover on downs, the Classic’s again attempted to continue their passing attack, however the Motor City Defense was able to intercept the ball once again. This interception allowed the V8’s to finish off the third quarter with a field goal bringing the score a bit closer at  14-6.

As the fourth quarter began, Wide Receiver Al Dillapree Sr. received the V8’s kickoff and returned it all the way to the house for a touchdown– the first ever in team history!. The V8’s tried to bounce back, however they were stalemated as DT Adam Chance (2 tckls., 2 sacks) was able to break through the line for a sack returning the ball back to the Canton Offense. As the Classics’ Offense attempted to increase the lead, Motor City was able to create another turnover with an interception and score their first touchdown to make things interesting. The onside kick attempt was recovered by Canton which led to another three points off of the foot of Kicker Rob Emms with a 51 yard field goal. Motor City made a last-ditch effort to score, but the game was closed out with an interception by FS Bob Funk (8 tckls., 2 pd., 1 int.) making the final score 24-13 Canton.

The Classics will face the former 2x SFL Champion Denver Nightwings in Week 3 of Season 20.
