The First of Many
Last Sunday, the Canton Classics clashed with the Sioux Falls Sparrows for what would turn out to be a challenging game throughout. Both teams seemed well prepared and traded contested blows for much of the first three quarters. However in the end, it was the Classics who were able to pull out their first victory of the season as the Sparrows fell to a respectable record of 3-3.
At the half, the game was a defensive gem and was tied at 7 a piece. Sioux Falls started the game with a solid offensive drive, but it was thwarted by back to back sacks from DT Gary “The Beast” Birney and DE Chris Porter. , setting up an eventual change of possession.
Canton’s ground game pounded the Sparrows all evening, led by RB Robert Johnson, who contributed 28 carries for 86 yards and FB Chris Comisac’s 3 carries for an additional 11 yards. As exciting as the rushing attack had been, it was the timely deep connections by QB Cameron Curtis that did most of the damage. Curtis ended the contest making good on 17 of his 25 attempts for 314 yards and 3 TD’s, while the likes of WR Mike Twinscrew (5 catches for 112 yards 1 TD), TE Jack Wall (2 catches for 102 yards one TD) and WR Kendra Hall (6 catches for 67 yards and one TD) made for easy-to-find targets.
When asked for a comment, TE Jack Wall said: “It was a great game from start to finish. A complete showing, starting with our defense, all the way through to the offense. SXF is a strong team with a great history and it is truly great to get our first win against such a storied franchise. 1st of many to come!”
Defensively, the Classics may have played their best game so far this season. Led by SS Evan Lacey’s 7 tackles, it was the timely sacks by previously mentioned DT Gary Birney (2), DE Chris Porter (1) and DT Odette Boudreaux (1) and interceptions by FS Frank Bernstine (2), FS Bob Funk (1) and LB Gary Clem that solidified the game.
Bernstine stated: “Happy to see our defense playing tough and getting that elusive first win we've been fighting for. Great game to start our winning streak off of.”
Head Coach Twinscrew added: "We had a good game against an excellent Sioux Falls team, and Chris Porter put together a fantastic Defensive playbook that got us that win! As we are getting things ironed out here, there is still quite a bit to work on, but I'm ecstatic that we got our first team win for Kristian, Adam and the city of Canton and there are more to come as Chris and I, along with our excellent scout team get in our groove."
Next, the Classics will travel to Buffalo, NY to face the former 4x SFL Champion, Queen City Corsairs, in hopes of obtaining their second win of the season.
