An Epic Victory
The Portland Fleet traveled to Fatherhood Festival Field to take on the Canton Classics who were feeling exceptionally confident and riding high off of a two game winning streak. The Classics shot the first torpedo as QB Cameron Curtis hit FB Chris Comisac with a 50 yard pass, placing the Classics into Fleet territory. Curtis then delivered a beautiful 25 yard pass to WR Mike Twinscrew, bringing the Classics to the one yard line. From there, RB Robert Johnson was able to power the ball in from the goal line, giving Canton an early lead.
After trading possessions, the Fleet were able to intercept a pass by Curtis and quickly went to their star RB Ezekiel Love. Behind the legs of Love and the precision passing of QB Cyris Jive, the Fleet managed to tie the game at 7 and eventually take a 17 – 10 lead. But right before halftime, QB Curtis (20/27, 266 yards, 2tds.) was able to get right back in sync with WR Kendra Hall (6 rec., 99 yards, 1 td) on two spectacular passes right down the middle of the field, bringing the Classics within field goal range. That’s when K Rob Emms (3 att., 3 made, long of 43) added another three points to the Classics scorecard, bringing the tally at the half 17 – 13 Portland.
But during halftime, the Canton Coaching staff gave a speech that lit a fire under the Classic Defense. To start off the third quarter, LB Mark Gronek (5 tck., 4 assist, 1 int.) read QB Jive’s pass and picked it off in the middle of the field, giving Canton great field position. And then it happened… The Canton Offense and QB Cameron Curtis went to work. Curtis dropped dimes to WR Mike Twinscrew, TE Jack Wall (3 rec., 31 yards) and Kendra Hall for another Canton touch down. With the extra point by Emms, Canton took a 20 – 17 lead.
But the Fleet weren’t finished. After the Canton Defense knocked RB Love out of the game, Fleet backup RB Lonnie Wright broke free for a 56 yard rushing TD. But just when adversity showed its face, the Canton Classics did not give up. After a quick interception, the Curtis/Twinscrew duo struck again with another touch down bomb. On the next ensuing kickoff, the Classics were able to force a fumble and recover the ball at the Fleet 25 yard line. From there on, the book on this game was closed by a second interception by FS Bob Funk (7 tck., 2 assist, 2 int.) giving the Canton Classics a 30 – 24 victory.
When asked for comment, SS Evan Lacey said: “I would like to start off by giving God the Glory. I’m just so proud of this team. I mean, people have been doubting us all season but that’s ok. It’s our job to go out and prove them wrong every single week. And with this Coaching staff, locker room and fan support, the Canton Classics have every reason to think big”.
Canton’s next game, in which they will be gunning for their fourth straight victory, will be against the Motor City V8s at Bank Michigan Stadium in Detroit. Please tune in and continue to support your Canton Classics! #WeCAN.
